Toward the end of the Lenten season a time comes before the passion and rising of Christ where the Catholic church covers/veils all religious statues, icons, images, crucifixes, etc... Why do we do this? Why would we want to cover up our Lord?
The Tenebrae Service also known as the Mass of Darkness which is the friday Before Good Friday. The lights are out in the church except for a few dim candles on the alter, a few voices of soloists or choir members can be heard singing and chanting in the darkness and the readers and the Priest read the readings. As lal of this happens while you sit in the dark pew you start to wonder is this what the world is like without Jesus in it? no Light, just darkness, sadness, sin, and chaos!
we sing "stay with me remain with me watch and pray watch and pray" and remember how Jesus was praying in silence in the garden but the disciples fell asleep they could not stay and pray with Him.
The priest exits at the end and asks everyone to bang their books loudly on the pews (wait what?! Really?!) Yes the banging and yelling and the piano playing loudly out of tune shows us the chaos we fall into without Jesus. He is with us still loving us even in that chaos and even in that time of Darkness, but we need to cling to Him and turn to Him to truly see His light. The priest reenters and everything is silent as He carries the large church candle down the aisle. Jesus is the Light of the world the Light in the Darkness! We aren't ever alone in whatever challenge we are facing in life. Remember that Nexxt time your'e about to complain about your next struggle, did Jesus complain or trust God and say "let Your Will Be done" Not My Own.Let us offer up our suffering in remmeberance of Him as HE didd for us and call out to HIm in our darkness and He is Here. Not always healing our ills, or ailments in the earthly way we would like, but maybe He is using you for a greater part of His great plan.
This time when we look at the statues, crucifix of Christ's ultimate sacrifice, an image of Jesus's sacred heart image, etc, think to yourself in this time of darkness and fasting or hard challenge in my life i miss Jesus when i see Him covered up at church but Hes not in the statue! He literally is the Eucharist!!!! Even in this time of whatever we are facing, He is here! He rose again! He defeated Death itself! Do you think He can conquer whatever youre dealing with?
